Fresh Prince is Still Fresh
So it's 11:00 on a Saturday night and I'm watching Fresh Prince of Bel-Air. As funny (or sad) as that may be the episode really connected to the paper I wrote. I talked about how great this show was at bringing up social issues and providing a fresh and unique perspective while doing it. this was the episode where Kellogg gives Will "speed" to help him deal with finals and basketball and Carlton accidentally takes them at Prom. The episode brought up drugs and the struggles that go with being a student-athlete. Despite the fact I knew about all this already I was still watching it pretty intently. The show is so relatable to a myriad of audiences even to this day.

despite it playing on streotypes it is a great show, and does have good messages in it
ReplyDeleteI think one of the main messages of the show is that it shows those stereotypes sometimes and makes them obvious to make the audience aware of them.
ReplyDeleteyeah show in particular delt with a lot of social issues especially race. and of course the carlton dance
ReplyDeleteI agree with you. I love that show and constantly watch the episodes even though I know most of them. They do do a good job with presenting a lot of issues. They dont just highlight the negative, but they have many contrasting characters that show many different issues in that community.
ReplyDeletei loved this show, will smith was so fly, and even at a young age, i think it made me feel better to see black people succeeding on television, even if they were fictional. i wonder if having fictional succesful black families makes white people feel better about years of forcing black people into poverty with government and social constructs. REGARDLESS, fresh prince is still fresh.
ReplyDeletewas this one of those "afternoon special" episodes about speed? like in saved by the bell when jesse was addicted to caffene pills? "I'm so excited...i'm so scared!"
yeah it was carlton doing the speed. I just think that this show is still applicable to today's society. Really impressive.
ReplyDeleteThey need episodes like the one you've mentioned that grounds the show. We may not all live in a Bel Air mansion, but we can certainly relate to these types of issues.
ReplyDeleteBtw, I came across this link, Fresh Prince all day, everyday.. http://freshprincetv.com
