Princeton & Diversity
After reading the article on Princeton and diversity it made me think about minorities and television. Often, many people think of minorities and immediately think of blacks or black shows. Sometimes, Hispanics are forgotten. A prime example of a great show that gives a look into Hispanic life is The Goeorge Lopez Show. I was never really a fan of his comedy but the show does deal with a lot of issues from a Hispanic perspective and sometimes it was really eye-opening. It's interesting to see how this article spurs the mind to other connected subjects.

yeah i have seen some of his comedy and i'm not even that much of a fan of his but it's funny how stand up comedy can really expose a lot of racial issues.
ReplyDeleteIt true that African American do seem to get more highlighted than Latinos. George Lopez does do a good job a representing latino families. It seems that people are (rightfully so) always concerned with the apperarence and treatment of African Americans but fail to think about other groups such as Latino's or the chinese.
ReplyDeleteThat is a really good point. I used to watch The George Lopez show once in a while as well and have seen some of his comedy on talk shows and such and it is a good example of the representation of other races in the media that may not get as much attention. I actually saw him on the Oprah Winfrey show a month or two ago on a special comedy hour episode (as well as a few other shows here and there) and it seems like a decent amount of his jokes have to do with his Mexican heritage. I never really thought about comedy acts as a way of bringing attention to race or ethnicity, but it seems to work...
