Tru Life
So I somehow was suckered into watching an episode of Tru Life on MTV about single mothers. The most startling thing waqs how the show clearly followed the "scripts" and "stereotypes" that we so often see in society. We have the 21 year old white girl who goes out and parties while her mom and sisters watch her daughter. Then there is the black mom who had a baby at 20 and her fiancee is locked up for drug possession. Yeah, stereotypes are often based on reality. But MTV consciously picked these girls and their stories for a particular reason: they just happened to fit into a nice, neat stereotype.

That seems like a pretty depressing show. We don't even know for sure if these stories are "real." They could be but often times the stories are staged. MTV stages most of their "reality" shows.
ReplyDeleteWow I always liked true life, except one episode about living a double life, when i thought that wow now theyve ruined it for themselves
ReplyDeleteI think the people who find people for these shows, purposely look for stereotypes... These shows are nothing but drama, and normal everyday people aren't gunna be interesting. They couldn't pick out a pregnant 20 year old girl who is married and has the support of her family, because that wouldn't be much of a show.
ReplyDeleteI think the producers are partly to blame but also you have to consider the type of people who are actually willing to be on a show like true life. As a new teen mother, should your first priority be getting on an MTV reality show? I know if I was in that position I wouldn't want a camera crew anywhere near me.
ReplyDeleteSadly, it seems like the producers of these types of shows, such as True Life and The Real World, look for people that fit into certain stereotypes because they think it makes for good television. Honestly, I don't get it. For shows that are supposed to represent "true life", they just don't seem to make sense.
