Brockton High

Well I'm sure everyone heard the news about the shooting on the Brockton High campus on wednesday. I have kids I mentor who were pretty shook up over this and see it as a wake-up call. Until they hear the media and other people's opinions. There is the usual "well i'm not surprised it is Brockton." And it really pisses me off. I don't understand why my city gets the reputation. Yes, plenty of bad things happen in my city. Amazingly, they happen elsewhere too. Bad things happen in Weymouth and Sudbury and West Roxbury too. I'm just so tired of hearing how Brockton is all thugs doing drugs and shooting people. Not everyone here does it. 99% of the kids at that school are good kids who just wanna make something of themselves. So before you go around labeling these kids and this city, why don't you spend a day here and walk around. Let me know and I will be your tour guide. Maybe you will be surprised at what you see.

  1. I agree with you, most of the people in Brockton are good people. But unfortunatley Brockton also has a higher rate of crime and certain things that other areas around it do not have. For this reason Brockton is going to get a bad name. Its going to take a while for Brocktons name to change. Unless the numbers say otherwise anytime soon. Brockton isnt a bad place, but some bad people seem to go there and make it seem bad.

  2. I hear you but the higher rate of crime can also be related to the fact that we have a higher population and

  3. the socio-economic status. It's pretty annoying when something bad happens and everyone makes it seem like this is the only place where crime occurs. I'm pretty sure it happens in everyone else's towns too.

  4. I know its terrible how people autimatically assume a place is bad based on its coverage. When I moved to the Bronx for my Freshman year of college everyone from home was wondering why I would move to such a dangerous place. But in reality the Bronx really isn't that bad and it has some really nice places. Im from Falmouth and people think that place is the safest ever. But we have so many problems with drugs and stuff. We even had kids stabbed in our high school but you never heard about this just because people assume Falmouth is a nice town.

  5. I use to live in Brockton and then moved to Rockland. Though the crime rate may have been significantly lower then Brockton, the school system sucked. I was suddenly getting easy A's in classes that I was getting B's and C's in Brockton. Brockton had an awesome education system and am regretful that I couldn't finish my time there.

  6. I completely agree with you! I have lived in Brockton my entire life and as long as I can remember, I have had to defend the city to people who aren't from here. It gets really frustrating! I went to Brockton schools and I was never in a gang or involved with drugs or crime! I did think it was interesting that a week after the shooting on the high school campus, Brockton High was named one of the top high schools in the country by U.S. News and World Report. Maybe that bit of information being broadcast on the news will change people's minds a little bit.

  7. It is really sad that schools shootings are anything but surprising. When Columbine happened it was a legit shock, now it is just another day in this crazy world we live in. It is scary to think that children run the risk of being murder simply by stepping foot inside a school. Arn't schools a place where kids learn about the world, not to experience the horrors it has to offer?
